With nearly 20 years of experience in the restaurant industry, Neal McCarthy brings a high standard of service and strong ambition as general manager and co-owner of Miller Union. His extensive background in managing the back of the house and his love for front of the house finesses allow McCarthy to serve his guests exceptional meals in a warm, welcoming environment.
As the brains behind Miller Union’s exceptional wine program, McCarthy selects small producers who use biodynamic and organic farming practices. The wine list balances the menu’s simple, Southern-inspired fare while reinforcing the restaurant’s sustainable mission. Wine Enthusiast magazine has recognized Miller Union as one of the top 100 lists in the country, specifically praising its commitment to sustainability. In 2017, Miller Union was named a finalist for “Outstanding Wine Program” by the James Beard Foundation.
Prior to making his dream of owning his own restaurant a reality, McCarthy dedicated 10 years of energy and passion as general manager at Atlanta’s acclaimed Italian restaurants, Fritti and Sotto Sotto. Before moving to Atlanta, McCarthy was a waiter and bartender in Charleston, S.C., after transplanting south from Philadelphia, where he began his career in the restaurant industry as a line cook at a cheesesteak restaurant. McCarthy began cooking when he was 13 years old after he developed a great interest in it during his childhood.
McCarthy grew up in England, spending hours in the kitchen watching his mother prepare dishes from classic French cookbooks for dinner parties. Today, he is motivated by the idea of providing great food and service while stewarding the restaurant in environmental issues that impact the industry. He strives to please every guest and make his employees happy and proud of the food they serve.
McCarthy lives in Decatur, Ga., with his wife, their two sons and lots of animals - including chickens. When not working at the restaurant, he enjoys learning about wine, fishing and organic gardening.
